Can’t figure out what to wear? Want to save the oceans? On January 13th you can take care of BOTH of these pressing problems with Wear Blue for the Oceans Day!
A coalition of citizen activists and conservationists across the country are bringing people together to take action to save the oceans by supporting President Obama’s intent to create a National Ocean Policy. This might seem abstract, but it’s incredibly important! Currently more than 40 federal agencies have a jurisdiction over the oceans–and they don’t always talk about what to do with it! How we manage ocean uses has huge implications for people–and more importantly to readers of this blog, sea otters!
For more information about how to get involved, check out www.wearblueforoceans.org . The website is a fun hub that features characters from Sherman’s Lagoon, and links you to Facebook and Twitter feeds, directs you to local events, and can help you connect to other like-minded ocean fans. Planned events are occurring in San Francisco, LA New Orleans and Washington DC. If you don’t live near one of these places, you can plan your own event, or check with your local ocean-advocacy org.
Although sea otters apparently haven’t made it into Sherman’s Lagoon yet, they definitely would benefit from the increased coordination that National Ocean policy would have–if we all stand together and push for strong conservation values! So be sure to wash your blue shirt this weekend–the sea otters will thank you!
